Layanan hosting gratis GeoCities yang sangat popular pada pertengahan 90-an tidak mampu bertahan. Situs yang pernah dibeli oleh Yahoo senilai US$ 3,57 miliar itu akhirnya dihentikan. GeoCities beroperasi selama 15 tahun.

Yahoo mengumumkan menutup pendaftaran user baru dan akan menutup layanan itu. “Kami akan menyediakan detail mengenai penutupan GeoCities dan bagaimana menyelamatkan data yang dimiliki,” kata Yahoo.

Pengumuman itu menandai akhir salah satu pioner layanan hosting gratis. GeoCites awalnya didirikan pada 1994 sebagai Beverly Hills Internet yang lima tahun kemudian dibeli oleh Yahoo senilai US$ 3,57 miliar.

Pembelian itu ternyata langkah yang salah dan menyebabkan dilema finansial bagi Yahoo pada saat ini. GeoCities dibeli Yahoo saat dotcom sedang mengalami masa keemasan. Namun tak lama kemudian era itu hilang dan harga saham GeoCities jatuh bersama hilangnya era itu.

GeoCities ditinggalkan usernya secara besar-besaran saat mengumumkan syarat ketentuan baru, konten yang diposting akan dimiliki oleh GeoCities. Langkah itu belakangan juga dilakukan oleh Facebook.

70% of BlackBerry in Indonesia illegally
